Braces and the school year: a Little Elm parent’s guide.

Orthodontic visits happen on weekdays, and so does school. Here’s how families make the two fit, from summer starts to band practice to picture day.

The short answer

There’s no clinically “right” month to start braces. Summer is popular because appointments are easier to schedule and the first sore few days happen away from school. But if the orthodontist says it’s time in October, starting in October is fine.

Why so many families start in summer

The first week in braces is the one kids remember. Teeth are tender, soft food sounds great, and they’re getting used to talking with new hardware. Doing that in July instead of during a test week takes some pressure off.

Summer also frees up the calendar. Elate’s offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00, and closed on weekends. During the school year that means working visits around class. In summer, any slot works.

The flip side: lots of families think the same way, so summer consult slots fill up. Booking the free consult in spring gives you room to choose your start date.

Fitting appointments around school

After the start, visits come every several weeks for the length of treatment. A few things help:

  • Pick the office near the campus, not the house. Little Elm ISD’s Strike Middle School and Prestwick Elementary physically sit in The Colony, close to that office. Hackberry Elementary has a Frisco address.
  • Know your district. Little Elm addresses can be zoned to Little Elm ISD, Frisco ISD, or Denton ISD, so check yours. Our Little Elm ISD guide covers campuses and the 2026-27 renames.
  • Rotate the time slot. If visits always land during the same class period, ask to vary them.
  • Switch offices if a schedule changes. Same two doctors and the same records at all three.

Band

Brass and woodwinds

Most wind players need a short adjustment period after braces go on. Orthodontic wax over the brackets helps. Let the band director know so the first week isn’t a surprise.

Sports

Practice and games

A mouthguard is part of the uniform now, and the type matters with braces. Full sports guide.

Photos

Picture day, prom, graduation

If a date matters, say so at the consult. Sometimes treatment can be planned with it in mind. Nobody can promise an exact finish date, so don’t build plans around one.

Lunch

The cafeteria

Braces rule out hard and sticky foods. Aligners come out to eat, so they need a case, not a napkin. Napkins are how aligners end up in the trash.

The backpack kit

Worth keeping in a zip pouch for the school year:

  • Travel toothbrush and a small toothpaste
  • Floss threaders or picks
  • Orthodontic wax for anything that pokes
  • An aligner case, if they’re in aligners
  • Lip balm, especially the first few weeks
