Is Little Elm Elementary closing? What the district has actually said.

The rumor has been going around Little Elm parent circles. We went through the district’s board agendas, minutes, budget documents, and news posts to see what’s on the record and what isn’t.

The short answer

As of October 10, 2026, we can’t find any Little Elm ISD board action, agenda item, or announcement to close Little Elm Elementary. The campus is open for the 2026-27 school year. What did happen this year is a name change, a second school rename, a paused plan for a new elementary school, and an independent efficiency audit. Put together and passed along secondhand, it’s easy to see how that became “they’re closing a school.”

What changed in 2026

Cesar Chavez Elementary became Little Elm Elementary

On April 20, 2026, the board voted unanimously to rename Cesar Chavez Elementary School as Little Elm Elementary School. Star Local Media reported that the district said it weighed community values in the decision, and that signage and materials would be updated over time. Same building at 2600 Hart Road, same K-5 grades. If you heard “Chavez is going away,” this is very likely what it was.

Lakeview Elementary became Dr. Ashley B. Glover Elementary

The board also approved renaming Lakeview Elementary, on Waterside Drive, as Dr. Ashley B. Glover Elementary starting with the 2026-27 school year. Dr. Glover was a longtime Little Elm educator who grew up in the district, taught there, and later served as its Director of Federal Programs and Accountability. She died in 2023. So two familiar elementary names disappeared from the district’s campus list in the same year. Neither school closed.

The eighth elementary school is on hold

Voters approved a $289.5 million bond that included two new elementary campuses. The first, Lakewood Village Elementary, opened for 2025-26. According to the district, the board originally planned to name the eighth elementary after Dr. Glover, but that campus’s opening was put on hold when enrollment declined. That’s the clearest sign on the record that growth has slowed from the pace the bond planned for.

An efficiency audit and a smaller budget

On May 18, 2026, the board voted unanimously to hire MoakCasey for a voluntary efficiency audit of district operations under Texas Education Code 11.184. The audit report was on the board’s September 21 agenda. As of this writing, we haven’t found the report posted publicly, so we don’t know what it recommends.

The 2026-27 general fund budget was proposed at about $96.8 million, roughly $3.46 million less than the year before.

So could a closure come up later?

It’s possible, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Efficiency audits often look at how full each building is, and districts with slowing enrollment sometimes consolidate campuses. Little Elm Elementary’s fall 2026 class sizes are on the small side, with averages ranging from about 15 students in 4th grade to about 21 in 5th, according to the district’s class size report.

But small classes, an audit, and a paused new school are not a decision. Nothing we found names Little Elm Elementary, or any other campus, for closure. Little Elm ISD has repurposed buildings before. Zellars Elementary, for example, was discussed at public board meetings in 2013, became an administration building in 2014, and now houses the district’s full-day PreK. That kind of change takes months and happens in the open.

If a closure or consolidation is ever proposed, it would show up on a posted board agenda before any vote. That’s the place to watch, not a Facebook thread.

How to keep an eye on it yourself

  • Board agendas and packets are posted before each meeting on the Little Elm ISD board meetings page. Regular meetings are usually on a Monday evening once a month.
  • Look for the efficiency audit report. If it’s posted, the recommendations section is the part to read.
  • Check your zone with the district’s school zone finder. Some Little Elm addresses aren’t in Little Elm ISD at all.
  • Ask your campus. Principals hear about boundary or program changes early and can tell you what’s real.

We’ll update this page if the district posts the audit report or takes any action involving Little Elm Elementary. The date at the top shows when it was last checked.

Why an orthodontic guide is writing about this

Fair question. A lot of Little Elm families plan orthodontic visits around which campus their kids attend, and a school change can shift that whole routine. If your child’s school ever does change, nothing about orthodontic treatment has to restart. At Elate, records follow you between all three offices, so families just pick the office closest to the new campus. More on planning braces around the school year.
